Devolo are one of the major players in the home-networking field, and have sold more than 10 million Powerline adapters globally. Their latest model, the Devolo dLan 1200+ is perhaps the fastest Powerline adapter available today, promising speeds up to 1200Mbps using the latest AV2 standards
Like any of the devices listed here, achieving the stated maximum speed is unlikely, but in Powerline terms, this is still blazing fast.
Earlier Devolo models, such as the dLan 650, used a technology called Range+ that extended the powerline adapter concept to use the Earth wire in your home electrical wiring (previously, the technology had only used the Live and Neutral wires). The 1200+ model uses some smart technology to optimise the path of the signal through your home to make the absolute best use of the wiring. This has helped push up the speeds and stability of the signal.
The dLAN 1200+ is equipped with a gigabit Ethernet connection and a gigabit Ethernet cable. The Starter Kit, including everything you’ll need to get up and running – the base, a second adapter unit, plus cables, costs around £120 (Nov 2014). If you need any additional adpaters there can be bought for around £65. In fact the device is compatible with all previous devolo adapters in the 200/500/600Mbps range, though using the slower devices will limit the speeds attached to this.
A couple of smaller but still plus points are that the Devolo engineers have managed to lower the power consumption of the new device, and the pass through feature, common on many higher end devices, means you won’t lose the socket it is plugged into.
The device is lacking additional Ethernet ports (which would enable you to plugin multiple devices to one adapter), and this model doesn’t currently allow you to Wi-Fi hotspots to extend your Wi-Fi to those hard to reach places. though a Wi-Fi version is in the pipeline.
